Test Automation is often viewed as the answer for all testing ills - the ultimate way of saving time and improving quality on a project. As a result, the tools to implement automation may be acquired with the expectation that they are a simple-to-use, "out-of-the-box" solution.
In reality, automation tools are sophisticated utilities
that require a level of skill to use to achieve maximum effect.
This, combined with a poor understanding of how best to reap
the benefits of automation, leads to many automated testing
projects failing in their objectives. This can lead to the
tool joining other, similar investments as 'shelf-ware'.
In truth, automation tools such as Mercury QA Run or WinRunner
can be instrumental in saving time and improving quality for
a testing project, but the skills have to be developed and
the tests properly planned and designed.
LAUNCH PAD is the SQS-UK strategy for delivering a combination of training and consultancy in test automation, in a short intensive, period. All experienced practitioners with a track record in test automation, our consultants will ensure that your newly established Test Automation Team will hit the ground running.
LAUNCH PAD comprises three phases, covering a total of two weeks, with the following deliverables:
Phase 1 Implementation - 2 Days: SQS-UK Consultants, in attendance at your site, oversee the installation of QA Run or WinRunner into the test environment. This ensures best configuration and enables the performance of the tool within a technical validation to be undertaken to give confidence that the tool interacts appropriately with your system under test.
Phase 2 Formal Training - 3 Days: SQS-UK will deliver a formal training course to your chosen staff, introducing them to automation best practice and QA Run/WinRunner. This ensures that the automation testing effort will be directed to give the maximum return on investment.
Phase 3 Mentoring - 5 Days: SQS-UK will work with your staff to lead them through designing and implementing their first automated tests, and establish an ongoing methodology for the project. This ensures that the first automated tests are prepared and executed and results assessed to ensure success. These tests are valuable assets that can be re-used and modified for the future.
Following this, SQS-UK will return to the site for a one-day
"mentoring clinic", to review and answer any questions
identified by the Test Team since completion of the LaunchPad.
